Troubleshooting

Here are the most common issues encountered when setting up and running Net Worth Navigator.

Symptom Likely Cause & Fix
python not found Python isn’t installed or isn’t on your PATH. Windows: Re-run the Python installer and check “Add Python to PATH”. Linux/macOS: Try python3 instead of python.
pip install fails You’re using the system Python, not the virtual environment. Use the full path: .venv/bin/python -m pip install ... (Linux/macOS) or .venv\\Scripts\\python.exe -m pip install ... (Windows).
cannot execute binary file (Windows) You’re running a Linux-format path on Windows. Use backslashes: .venv\\Scripts\\python.exe not .venv/bin/python.
ExecutionPolicy error (Windows PowerShell) PowerShell restricts script execution. Run this once: Set-ExecutionPolicy -Scope CurrentUser RemoteSigned, then retry.
Windows Firewall blocks the editor When the firewall prompt appears: click Allow access, uncheck Public networks, keep Private networks checked.
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'plotly' Dependencies aren’t installed. Run .venv/bin/python -m pip install -r requirements.txt (Linux/macOS) or .venv\\Scripts\\python.exe -m pip install -r requirements.txt (Windows).
verify_install.py shows [FAIL] Run it again with the correct Python path (see above). If it still fails, check that all files are present — try git clone again or re-extract the ZIP.
Empty chart / “No data” after render Your scenario may be using data_source.mode = "monarch" but Monarch isn’t set up. Either configure Monarch or switch to Manual Entry mode.
Can’t find the output HTML Output files are in output/scenarios/<slug>/<mode>/projection.html. If you ran run.py --scenario sample, look in output/scenarios/sample/deterministic/projection.html.
ImportError: cannot import name 'tomllib' Your Python is older than 3.11. Install Python 3.11 or later and recreate the virtual environment.
Config editor shows “Internal Server Error” Restart the editor: press Ctrl+C to stop it, then run the start command again.
Changes to the editor don’t appear Hard-refresh your browser (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Shift+R on macOS). Browser cache may be serving an older version.
